Royals Fall In Season Opener
The Royals opened their season in Cobourg on Monday evening, though they didn’t get the result they were looking for, falling 6-2 to the Cougars in regulation.
Cobourg struck first, taking advantage of an early powerplay to take a 1-0 lead. Blake Peters-Davey, who scored the Cougars’ first goal, added a second at the midway mark of the opening period.
Charlie Nolette got Markham on the board for the first time this season with a great individual effort, earning his first career OJHL goal. Cobourg responded with three unanswered goals, and while William Godfrey got the Royals back within three with five and a half minutes remaining, another tally for the Cougars put the game out of reach once and for all.
Leadership Group Announced
The Royals announced their 2024/25 leadership group on Thursday night. William Godfrey was named captain, with Owen Fergusson and Ashton Miwa serving as alternate captains. Read more in our separate post on the announcement!
Royals Prepare For Pair Of Weekend Games
The Royals will look to shake off their Monday defeat this evening in their home opener against the North York Rangers.
The visiting Rangers come to Markham also seeking their first win. They have a 0-3 record via losses to Stouffville, St. Michael’s, and Milton. Last year, North York accumulated the fewest points in the Eastern Conference, finishing with an 8-45-1-2 record.
In last year’s season series, the Royals won all four regular-season games against the Rangers and will look to maintain that momentum in 2024/25.
On Sunday, the Royals will travel to Prince Edward County to take on the Wellington Dukes. The Dukes finished last season with the league’s sixth-best record, going 35-18-0-3.
Last season, Markham went 3-1 against the Dukes, winning the first three games before dropping the final matchup in February.
Puck drop on Friday is at 7:30 p.m. at Markham Centennial Community Centre, while Sunday’s game will be played at 2:30 p.m. at Essroc Arena. You can also catch the games on FloHockey.tv.
